- ClamXav is not one of more recognized names in the arena of anti-virus/anti-malware software, and for good reason. It is not equipped with the menus of features that larger, more well-known companies offer. The software is free, however, which is a significant advantage for customers seeking a.
- ClamXav 2.8 opens a new, premium-priced chapter for this storied free Mac antivirus app, but a counterintuitive experience and poor third-party test scores make it difficult to recommend.

We are excited to announce that yet again AV-TEST, the independent IT Security Institute, has awarded ClamXAV full marks in its most recent review of home user security products for macOS Catalina.
During May 2020, the Institute evaluated 9 home user security products for macOS 10.15 Catalina. It focused on malware detection, false positives and performance. ClamXAV scored full marks in each section: protection, performance, and usability. This shows you that ClamXAV really does provide you with award-winning protection without slowing down your computer.
At ClamXAV, we are committed to investing in our product in order to provide the best protection for MacOS. The results of this review show that this commitment is bringing real benefits to our customers.
Best Antivirus For Mac
We designed ClamXAV to put users in control of how to protect their Macs, giving you the choice to scan the entire hard drive, or one specific file. Incoming files are scanned and quarantined if deemed suspicious, and will even block adware, leaving users free from irritating interruptions.
We are extremely proud of the product we have created, and that ClamXAV remains an independently run business with founder Mark Allan still at the heart of programming and developments. We are committed to building and providing the best security software for macOS there is to buy, and the results of this independent test show that we are on the right track!
You could think that ClamXav sports a clean interface, but unfortunately there’s not much more to see.
ClamXav is a graphic user interface for OS X based on Clam, a popular and powerful open-source and cross-platform antivirus. Until a few months ago you could download it for free, but now you have to buy it from the developer’ site.
ClamXav has two main features: a thorough scan of your hard disk, and a real-time warden called CalmXav Sentry. Unfortunately, the antivirus and Sentry don’t talk one another, so if Sentry catches up any unusual activity from a file on your HD, you have to launch a full scan before you can point out the malicious file, which is disheartening. Furthermore, there’s no obvious method to eliminate any threat: ClamXav trusts you to use the contextual menu. The software doesn’t offer any firewall feature either.
A nice touch is that you can use whatever antivirus engine you like, you just have to tell ClamXav to use it. Although it’s a classy move from its developer, we don’t think a typical user can take advantage of this feature.
If you have any previous version, when ClamXav was free, you can still use it (for its database will be updated anyway), but if you’re in the market for an antivirus for your Mac, you’d better keep searching.
Conclusion
Although ClamXav is a popular solution, it can’t compete with other free options.
